Reconciliation and the slave trade
There will also be creative input from artist-in-residence, Graeme Evelyn, who is currently working on the Reconciliation Reredos, a major commission at Saint Stephen’s, inspired by contemporary responses to our slave trade legacy.
In each workshop a maximum of 12 participants will be asked what Bristol’s history of slave trading means to them.
We will explore what the faith of many traditions has to teach us about healing old wounds and rebuilding community.
Participants will be asked to respond creatively to the theme of Reconciliation, with Saint Stephen’s own rich decoration as inspiration.
Participants will learn stone carving skills and work on their own carving but will also work together, to join their work into a collaborative piece of public sculpture.
The workshops are designed for young people aged 12 to 14 and 15 to 19 – but we also have a few places for enthusiastic adults.
Our workshops are free to young people (and comply with Saint Stephen’s Child Protection and Health & Safety policies).
