Much of the discrimination LGBT people encounter is sadly often rooted in ignorance. LGBT History Month seeks to redress the balance, offering forward positive representations of lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans people.
With section 28 consigned to the history books in 2003, this is the ideal opportunity to get together as a community and repair the huge amount of damage it caused. As Sir Ian McKellen said, Section 28 created a culture of fear in state schools, turning LGBT matters into taboo: ‘The notorious Section 28 was a disaster for children in state schools because it encouraged their teachers to lie about their homosexuality.’ By learning their mistakes of their past, we can ensure that they are never made again in the future.
For millennia ignorance has surrounded the lives of LGBT people and it is this ignorance and lack of understanding about out community that often leads to homophobia. LGBT History Month is a chance to inform society of out past victories and struggles, who we were, and who we have become.
